The Michael and Kitty Dukakis Center for Public and Humanitarian Service is a private, independent, and non-partisan collegiate forum for research, dialogue, and civic engagement at Anatolia American University, in Thessaloniki, Greece. The Center connects academic insight with real public questions, creating opportunities for students, scholars, practitioners, and the wider community to engage seriously with the issues that shape civic life in Greece, the region, and beyond.
The Dukakis Center grew from the Michael S. Dukakis Chair in Public Policy and Service, inaugurated by Governor Michael S. Dukakis in Thessaloniki, and continues his belief that democratic life depends on informed citizens, principled leadership, and a commitment to the common good. Our work reflects that legacy in a practical way: by convening thoughtful public conversation, supporting policy-oriented inquiry, and helping young people develop the confidence and skills to participate in public life.
Today’s public challenges are rarely “single-issue.” They intersect: across institutions, economies, communities, technology, security, and the environment. The Dukakis Center offers a place to make sense of that complexity: through evidence-informed discussion, respectful exchange, and initiatives that translate ideas into action. Our programmatic interests span political science and international affairs, including themes such as democratization and leadership, civil society and grassroots movements, and defense and security studies, with attention to U.S.–Greek relations and cooperation across Southeast Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the wider Euro-Atlantic community.
"There is nothing you can do in this world more fulfilling and more satisfying than giving of yourself to others, and making a contribution to your community and your state or your nation and your fellow citizens..."
Michael S. Dukakis
