Short statement on the publication of Uniformed Societies: Contemporary Sociological and Historical Approaches, 1944-2024

In January 2026, the collective volume Uniformed Societies: Contemporary Sociological and Historical Approaches, 1944-2024, edited by Christos Aliprantis (Anatolia American University) and Panayis Panagiotopoulos (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), was published by Patakis Publications. This interdisciplinary collective work brings together some of the most recent research on the position and role of the Armed Forces and Security Forces in contemporary Greece. From the post-civil war nationalist lawfulness to the Metapolitefsi and the political attitudes of uniformed personnel in the 21st century, the book traces the social, ideological, and cultural transformations of the institutions that embodied, more than any other, the concept of the State. The contributions of historians and sociologists shed light on the journey from the intensely hierarchical and authoritarian "uniformed societies" of the mid-20th century to the contemporary micro-societies of security and defense professionals. They, therefore, explore issues of power, social mobility, gender, and political culture, thus detecting changes in the social body itself and deeper tensions between the State, Society, and Democracy.
