Psychology Department Marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science with Empowering Panel Event

On February 11, 2026, the Psychology Department of Anatolia American University, in collaboration with IASIS – HYPATIA Women’s Empowerment Center, organized the event “Women Who Question: Women Advancing Science in Psychology and Beyond” at the Bissell Library.

Held in celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the event created space for meaningful dialogue around empowerment, inclusion, and the shared responsibility of shaping the future of science and technology.

The panel brought together representatives from IASIS – HYPATIA Women’s Empowerment Center:

  • Stefania Papageorgiou, Coordinator;
  • Torina Tsepelaki, Psychologist; and
  • Katerina Gkikopoulou, Career Counselor.

From Anatolia American University, contributions were also made by

  • Dr. Maria Kyriakidou, Chair of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division;
  • Dr. Iro Koliakou, Head of STEM;
  • Dr. Christina Chatzidimitriou, Psychology Program Coordinator, who moderated the discussion; and
  • Dr. Kristi Poppi, Assistant Professor, who participated as commentator.

Throughout the discussion, panelists explored the important role of women in advancing science, while addressing issues of representation, leadership, research impact, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Particular emphasis was placed on the need for inclusive academic environments and on the active engagement of both women and men in promoting equity across science and technology fields.

The event attracted strong interest from students across disciplines and was attended by several classes. Faculty members who participated with their students included Dr. Christos Aliprantis, Dr. Filio Chasioti, Ms. Julie Carter, and Ms. Vaya Sidiropoulou.

The lively exchange of ideas and the strong student presence reflected the university community’s commitment to fostering critical inquiry, dialogue, and empowerment within the academic environment. Events such as this one highlight Anatolia American University’s dedication to creating learning spaces where important social and scientific questions can be examined openly, thoughtfully, and collaboratively.
