A New Academic Era Begins: Official Inauguration Ceremony of Anatolia American University
In a ceremony of historic significance and profound symbolism, Anatolia American University was officially inaugurated, introducing a new chapter both for higher education in Greece and for Anatolia, an educational non-profit institution with 140-year history.
The Official Inauguration Ceremony of Anatolia American University, the first non-state, non-profit university to receive a license for establishment and operation in Greece, occurred on June 4, 2026, at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, coinciding the annual meeting of Anatolia’s Board of Trustees in Thessaloniki.
Anatolia American University, registered as University Legal Entity (U.L.E.) No. 001, received its official operating license in late August 2025 and accreditation for all of its academic programs in October 2025, during the very first phase of evaluations conducted by the Accreditation and Certification Council of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education (HAHE). The University commenced operations in October 2025 with more than 200 Greek and international students, as well as hundreds of visiting students from universities in the United States and Europe. It offers a flexible curriculum modeled by American higher education institutions, together with an expanded scholarship program.
The event combined academic tradition, ceremonial formality, and the emotion of a historic milestone. It began with the official academic procession of the University’s leadership and faculty members in traditional academic regalia, following the protocol observed at American and European universities.

“For more than 100 years, our American and Greek Trustees have remained steadfast in their commitment to a singular goal: improving the lives of young people and Greek society by combining the best of Greek and American educational traditions,” said Chair of Anatolia’s Board of Trustees, Albert “Chip” Elfner, III, in his opening remarks, emphasizing that “today represents a historic milestone: our emergence as a fully recognized university in Greece. This achievement is the result of four decades of vision, stewardship, and persistence by successive boards, leadership, faculty, and staff. This is more than just a landmark for Anatolia; it is a landmark for the future of higher education in Greece.”

The Minister of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, Sofia Zacharaki, delivered an address at the Inaugural ceremony, conveying the congratulations of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to the institution’s leadership for this important new initiative and highlighting Anatolia’s enduring contribution to education and public service. She described education as a force that creates opportunities, reveals talent, and shapes the future, emphasizing: “This is the promise of Anatolia American University. This is the promise of higher education in Greece.” The Minister placed particular emphasis on Thessaloniki’s role as a major academic and research center in Southeastern Europe, noting that the city possesses a unique ecosystem of knowledge, innovation, and international partnerships that can serve as a driving force the development of the entire country. In this context, she highlighted the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Anatolia American University and the University of Macedonia, describing it as an outstanding example of the added value created through synergies among educational institutions for the benefit of the academic community and students alike. “This agreement highlights the importance of partnership, the power of trust, and the strength of shared ambition. When institutions collaborate, knowledge expands, research is strengthened, and opportunities multiply.
The Minister congratulated the administration, faculty, and all those involved in this venture, predicating that Anatolia American University will make a substantial contribution to strengthening the international presence of Greek higher education and creating new educational opportunities.

In his address, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the United States, Joshua Huck, in Greece, stated: “The U.S. has proudly supported Anatolia’s mission for decades. We have contributed more than 11 million dollars since 1959. Tonight’s inauguration is more than an institutional achievement. It is a statement about the future. It reflects confidence in the next generation of students, researchers, innovators, and entrepreneurs who will shape Greece and the region in an increasingly interconnected world.”

The Deputy Minister for Higher Education, Nikos Papaioannou, emphasized that the presence of Anatolia American University can add a new dynamic to Thessaloniki’s existing strong academic ecosystem. “The operation of non-state universities is not merely an institutional reform; it is an opportunity to expand the country’s academic and research footprint. The new university can strengthen Thessaloniki’s international profile, create new partnerships, attract students from the Balkans, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the wider region, and help the city acquire an even stronger international academic character.” He stressed the importance of the initiative not only for education, but also for the economy, the job market, businesses, and the city’s broader social prospects.

The Deputy Minister of Macedonia and Thrace of Greece, Konstantinos Gioulekas, focused on the objective of reversing the phenomenon of ‘brain drain’. “Until now, we have been accustomed to ‘exporting’ Greek students abroad. We want to reverse this trend and invite young people from other countries to study in our homeland. Northern Greece is not a region enclosed by its borders. On the contrary, our borders give us the opportunity to connect with the whole of Southeastern Europe. We can capitalize on this unique advantage through trust in our capabilities, trust in our educational services, trust in our highly significant public universities, and trust in the new university that is now officially embarking on its journey in Thessaloniki.”

The Deputy Minister of Development Responsible for Research and Innovation, Stavros Kalafatis, an Anatolia alumnus himself, expressed his deep emotion and pride regarding what he described as Anatolia’s historic leap into the future; “this remarkable incubator of excellence.”

The address delivered by Vice Governor of Thessaloniki, Konstantinos Gioutikas, also an Anatolia alumnus, was particularly moving, as he described the day of the inauguration as an occasion of not only historic but also personal significance. Reflecting on his school years as a boarding student on the Anatolia campus, he spoke about the values, experiences, and friendships that continue to accompany him to this day, expressing his joy, pride, and emotion regarding this new milestone in the institution’s journey.

For his part, Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, described the establishment of Anatolia American University as a significant development for the city, emphasizing that it further strengthens Thessaloniki’s established substantial academic and intellectual footprint. As he noted, the operation of a new non-state university with an international orientation represents a major investment in human capital, innovation, and the city’s connection to global academic networks.

He noted that the operation of the University aspires to contribute to the establishment of Greece as an international academic destination, reducing the outflow of young people seeking education abroad, encouraging the return of academics and scientists to the country, and creating new development prospects for Greece and Northern Greece.
“At Anatolia American University, we see not only challenges, but also profound opportunities to reimagine how education can serve humanity in the 21st century.” Anatolia possesses a long academic legacy. It was recognized as a degree-granting institution in the United States in 1894 and has been accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) since 1997. The establishment of a university in Greece had long been a strategic objective of Anatolia’s Board of Trustees and became possible through the institution’s strategic educational partnership with The Open University of the United Kingdom.

Greece possesses a strong network of public universities, distinguished by their achievements and their significant contribution to higher education, noted Provost of Anatolia American University, Dr. Stamos Karamouzis. “The country does not need universities that merely replicate what public institutions already offer. It needs institutions that complement them, enriching the academic landscape with new approaches, innovation, and international orientation. Today we inaugurate such an institution. Today we inaugurate Anatolia American University.” He added that the institution’s mission is to provide “an authentic American-style university experience that combines academic structure with intellectual freedom, social responsibility, active student engagement, and a vibrant university community.”

A lively performance by the Anatolia College Alumni Association Choir served as one of the ceremony’s final highlights. The evening came to a close with the striking of the gong by Chair of Anatolia’s Board of Trustees, Albert “Chip” Elfner III, a symbolic act widely used internationally to mark the beginning of a new journey. Through that, Anatolia American University officially inaugurated its new academic era together with hundreds of alumni, members of the administration and faculty, supporters, and friends of the educational institution.
