Building the Future: Groundbreaking Ceremony for Building X at Anatolia American University

On Friday, June 5, 2026, Anatolia American University marked an important milestone in its development with the groundbreaking ceremony for Building X, the first new academic building to be realized as part of the institution’s long-term campus vision.

The ceremony occurred on the occasion of the annual Board meeting in Thessaloniki and  brought together members of the Board of Trustees, Anatolia’s leadership,  faculty, staff, and supporters to celebrate the beginning of a project that reflects the University’s continued investment in academic excellence and student success.

In his remarks, Chair of the Board of Trustees Albert “Chip” Elfner, III described the occasion as a moment of optimism and purpose, emphasizing that educational buildings are far more than physical structures. They are expressions of a community’s belief in learning and in the transformative power of education to open doors and improve lives. Referring to Building X, he noted that the project embodies the idea that thoughtfully designed spaces can shape the educational experience and foster meaningful connections among students, faculty, and the broader university community.

President of Anatolia, Dr. Panos Vlachos, highlighted the role that high-quality learning environments play in helping institutions evolve and thrive. He highlighted that universities must continually look toward the future and create the conditions that enable innovation, collaboration, and growth. Building X, he noted, will provide the space needed to support Anatolia American University’s expanding academic community and is expected to increase student enrollment capacity by approximately 400 students when completed.

Chair of the Facilities Committee, Stathis Georgiadis, presented key features of the project, which will span 4,200 square meters and include eleven learning spaces, two flexible auditoriums that can function independently or as a single larger venue, as well as faculty and administrative offices designed to support teaching, learning, and collaboration.

The ceremony was also attended by the building's leading architect Ilias Papageorgiou, Founder of PILA studio, and Zoe Lisaridou, Head of the Bidding Department at AVAX GROUP and Director & General Manager of ETETH S.A. (AVAX GROUP OF COMPANIES), representing the teams contributing to the realization of this important project.

As the first step in a broader campus development plan, Building X symbolizes Anatolia American University’s commitment to creating an environment where students can learn, collaborate, and grow. More than a new facility, it represents an investment in future generations and in the University’s mission to provide an educational experience that prepares students to make meaningful contributions in an increasingly interconnected world.

Building “X” is one of four new buildings to be developed over time in accordance with Anatolia’s Campus Master Plan. It is conceived as a freestanding, through-building structure, designed to maintain a continuous connection with its surroundings while remaining in harmony with the adjacent buildings. The building will accommodate a diverse range of learning environments, from quiet spaces for reflection to open areas that encourage discussion, collaborative work, and social interaction. Its key features include:

• Flexible lecture theatres with retractable seating and movable acoustic partitions.
• A multimedia space designed to support digital learning and creative activities.
• Bright, naturally lit classrooms with carefully designed acoustics and lighting to provide an optimal learning environment.
• Multi-purpose collaborative spaces for group work, independent study, and project-based learning.
